Competition details and rules

So what's this all about then? In a nutshell, you and a lot of others send us photos of your finished green and Sally and I and the Judges will pick the best/loveliest/smartest and put the mini into production.
Entrants will need to agree that Hasslefree will have the rights to manufacture the 'best' miniature/miniatures. You as the winner get some money out of it, eternal fame, an introduction to the industry and we as a company receive the rights to the mini. We invest in a mould and we can make copies of the thing and sell it.

Many thanks to Knut Heykana at Celtos Legion for suggesting this to us and for writing the brief.

Competition brief

Bringing the science into sculpting…

All good Monster, Zombie or Mystery stories (and recently a growing number of crime series as well) share the same pool of props and characters. There is of course the valiant investigator with good looks and the tendency to believe in even the strangest theories, a trusted side-kick, slimy monsters and mutants (bent on destruction) and finally a whole set of geeky scientists, doctors and computer nerds who will try to save the world by hacking on their laptops, performing autopsies on each and everyone or solving riddles by collecting tiny bits of dirt from crime scenes.

Naturally a good tabletop scenario also shares a good deal of these 'ingredients'.

On a secret base, an alien autopsy is performed; In a secluded lab in the mountains there are rumours of a virus breakout, which brings the dead back to life (but are they alive ?); Strange things are happening in a research facility for experimental AI…

All these settings make for hours of tabletop fun… if you can get everything right..

Question: So what characters do we need?

We would like you to sculpt within the following five categories:

Scientists and Doctors
A team of Heroes
Minions of Evil
Hideous Monsters
Civilian Bystanders

For example: As funny as it sounds, there are virtually no models available of our trusted friends in lab coat and pocket protector. Think of the skinny computer kid with big glasses; Think of the big bearded guy with Laptop and the xxl-shirt with 'Dungeon Master' on it; Think of the Professor - the serious elderly one with the suit and tie beneath the spotless lab coat or the more traditional 'mad one' with the wild looks and the brain in a jar; Think of a doctor - the pathologist in full protection suit with the electric bone-saw or the more traditional white coat ; Think of a nurse or a para-medic or think of something else entirely, as long as it would be a character you would surely find in an secret laboratory, an autopsy room, a CSI lab, a hospital or similar facility

Nitty gritty rules

Every competition obviously needs some sets of rules. These rules aren't meant to give some personal advantage to us or our company but some things must be clear beforehand.

1. Entrants can make a figure from any of the stated categories, giving it any equipment they like in any pose they desire..... so long as it's 28mm scale (not necessarily 28mm tall) castable and has a basing tag that fits in to a 30mm or 40mm round edged base (as used by Warmachine and Dark Age). The sculpt needs to be made of an epoxy suitable for vulcanising like green stuff.

2: Multiple entries are allowed.

3. Using pieces of existing Hasslefree Miniatures figures is not allowed, other than those from 'little bits' sprues.

4. Secrecy is not an issue. You can put your WIPs all over the net if you like, so long as you don't mind people nicking your ideas.

5. Initial judging will be by public vote to determine the top entries. Sally and I and a panel of judges (who will not be allowed to vote for any entries they make) will then choose the over all winner.

6. The start date is Sunday 8th April 2007. Since we don't want to panic anybody there's no real rush to get your entries completed, the date for all entries to be with us is Sunday 8th July 2007. If it's still the 8th of July anywhere in the world you can email us your entry. Your pictures need to be sent to us here .Please send JPEG files compressed to 'best' quality (80-90%) and try to make sure your pics are no larger than 150Kb each.

7. The practicality of making the miniature will be judged alongside its degree of craftsmanship. If it's a bugger to cast or if we are going to have to chop it up and put bits on sprues it might lose a few points.

8. Results will be posted on Sallys birthday which is Tuesday 17th July 2007.

9. The winner from each of the 5 categories will receive a prize and a small amount of fame/notoriety. There is a prize of £150 in cold hard cash for each category. We will also make sure that the winner is recognised as the sculptor of the piece where at all possible and also sculpt their name on the back of the basing tag.

10. Entries will need to be original works of art - no copyrighted ideas please, other than recognised Hasslefree IP. Remember a 3D copy of a 2D original is still a violation of copyright, unless the original art is in the public domain or you have received (written) permission from the artist.

11. Age Limit. Since the aim is to cast and sell these figures, contestants must be 18 years or older. If the contestant is under 18, he or she must be able to produce written parental consent upon demand.

12. Rule Amendments. Rules are subject to change and/or clarifications without notice, as per the decision of Kev and Sally. Entry categories may be subject to alteration depending on the level of response for each and existing categories may be split or combined. Final category placement of all entries shall be determined by the judges.

13. Should the number and quality of submissions exceed expectations, we reserve the right to choose exclusively to purchase entries that don't receive first place for a fee to be agreed upon between us and the Sculptor on an individual basis. No runners up prize offer will be greater than £100 and will depend entirely on our finances at the time. In this event all submissions so recognized will be subject to the same conditions as the over all winner.

14. Should we not be able to agree on a prize, the sculptor is free to dispose of the miniature at their discretion unless it contains recognisable components of existing Hasslefree Miniatures or Intellectual Property. Should this be the case, the miniature may not be sold to a party other than Hasslefree Miniatures.

15. Fair Play. Only original sculpts will be accepted. By entering a figure in this contest you attest on your honour to be it's creator and holder of all rights to this figure. By doing so you accept all legal consequences that could arise should the figure or the rights to it be part of someone else's Intellectual Property.
Also you will exonerate Hasslefree Miniatures for any legal claims that could result from entering the competition.

16. Sculpts that have previously been entered in other online sculpting competitions (including HF) will not be accepted. Don't be so lazy go and make a new one!!

17. Risk Attribution. Hasslefree Miniatures can not take responsibility for winning submissions lost in the mail, the risk lies with the sculptor. If we do not receive the figure safely you won't get your cash so be sure to insure any winning entries.

18. The sculptor must be willing to submit his/her sculpt to the mouldmaker's ministrations. As such, he/she should be aware that a lot of pressure will be exerted on the green during the mouldmaking process. A piece of putty will survive this moulding process in direct relationship to the amount of care and skill used to make the original.

19. FIGURE REPRODUCTION.

This bit is very important, please read it carefully

As described in the introduction, castings of the winning entries will be sold by Hasslefree Miniatures as part of either an existing HF range or as part of the 'White Metal' project. To this intent, the sculptor agrees to turn over the rights to reproduce, distribute and display the figure EXCLUSIVELY to Hasslefree under the terms and conditions as specified above.
The sculptor will receive 10 copies of the mini and he/she may of course use the IP rights of the green and the mini for personal use. However this doesnot mean that you can then sell a copy or a conversion of your winning entry to another company or sell independently through your own website as we will own the figure in question. We are a family business trying to make a living and as such we take all risks that may jeopardise our livelihood very seriously. We may not have such a huge legal team as some of the larger manufacturers but we do have access to an excellent Legal team of Copyright and IP specialists and they will pursue our interests for us.

Happy sculpting!
